Rek: Tell me about Cyclone Records. = How did you=20 get started and what inspired you?
Cyclone Records is a one-stop = shop for=20 everything a band needs to take their success to the next level. This is = done=20 through local, regional and national compilations, full-length releases = and=20 other promotional vehicles. The underlying measure has always been that = Cyclone=20 Records' success depends upon the band's success and vice versa.=20

I have been a drummer since the early 80's and my passion has always = been=20 music. When I was a teenager, I would shop record stores looking for = local,=20 unknown talent that no one has heard before and they would become my = favourite=20 bands (and still are in many cases). It was the thrill of discovering = something=20 new and sharing it with friends. With Cyclone Records, I can now = discover new=20 talent and help them to be successful. I have always been a fan first = and a=20 businessman a far second.

Rek: What are you doing differently than other = companies?
Being a=20 musician, I have personally experienced the downfalls of the music = industry and=20 made many mistakes along the way. My approach is to help bands avoid = those=20 pitfalls and provide them with whatever services they need to be = successful=20 regardless of what that may be. If there is something that I can't do, = I'll find=20 someone who can. Another major driver behind what I do is negotiating = best rates=20 on services and passing those along to the artists so that cost is not = an=20 obstacle to their success. I believe in long term loyalty and do not = sign /tie=20 up artists in a contractual deal. They are free to work with me as long = as they=20 are happy, and leave if they aren't. I want to work with people that = want to=20 work with me because we have developed a partnership rather than a legal = obligation.

Rek: What do you see as the barriers of being an independent band = in the=20 Canada?
The industry is driven by so few players such as the = major=20 labels, mainstream radio, big name promoters who are driven by the = almighty=20 dollar. Some of the best talent never gets heard because they don't have = an in.=20 That leaves bands with the hurdles of distribution and promotion. = Anybody can=20 write a song, go into a studio and record it, produce a CD with X number = of=20 copies but then what? How does it get into the hands of fans? How does = the=20 artist build their fan base? It was from this that my compilation = concept arose=20 - bands are an integral part of the promotion and distribution and are=20 guaranteed a return on their investment. So it's a win-win. Another = barrier is=20 the overabundance of resources out there. I know that sounds funny, but = there=20 are so many web services (many of them good intentioned) out there = trying to get=20 a slice of the pie so that bands really don't know where to spend their = time,=20 energy and money to get the best return on their investment.

Rek: What was the biggest challenge when starting Cyclone=20 Records?
There have been a few challenges. Credibility was the = big one=85=20 starting out, I was an unknown entity with nothing to back me up but my = word, my=20 determination and my integrity. I really needed bands to take a leap of = faith=20 and see what I can do for them. Thankfully, that did happen (Blind Army = was the=20 very first to sign on) and I have built very strong business and = personal=20 relationships with some great musicians. I now find that, after having = four=20 releases in the past eight months, I am drawing a lot of attention and I = am=20 being contacted regularly by bands who want to work with me. Lots of it = is=20 through word of mouth from the bands that I currently work with which is = the=20 best compliment anyone could give me.

Rek: I recently read that you are now involved with online = download=20 retailers. Have you always been supportive of downloads? If not, when = did that=20 change?
I had a friend who was developing music recording = software in the=20 1980's and he and I had discussed software piracy at that time. His = philosophy=20 was that it was OK for people to pirate his software because its use = perpetuates=20 its longevity and loyalty to that platform. It took me awhile to get my = head=20 around that but in the end, I can agree with what he was saying. The = same can be=20 said for music downloads. There is a lot of illegal downloading = happening, but=20 in the end, the fan base of the artist grows. That translates into a = larger,=20 loyal following who will hopefully seek out music through legitimate = channels,=20 attend concerts, etc.

Rek: How do you see the landscape of the Canadian music industry = right=20 now?
Continuing what I was saying above, the music industry is = in a flux=20 right now. The urge to be signed by major labels just isn't what it used = to be.=20 Even indie labels are struggling to be successful. There is a major = upheaval=20 with artists taking control of their own success through internet = promotion but=20 it is very widespread and non-standardized. Artists can have their music = available through sites like myspace.com or newmusiccanada.com which = raises=20 awareness of the artist and their music but it doesn't generate revenue = for=20 them. Fans and buyers are becoming more savvy, too. Having music = available for=20 download through legitimate outlets is in answer to the changes. = Eventually the=20 concept of the CD will disappear and be replaced by another medium which = may or=20 may not be internet based. By all appearances, the MP3 player will be = the=20 standard of the future and online download retailers will be the method = for=20 people to get their hands on their favourite music.

Rek: Something you are doing is releasing a couple compilations in = the=20 near future. What is "The Greatest Underground Show on Earth" all about = and who=20 can we expect to hear on it.
Two compilations are currently being = replicated at Sony in Toronto, "On the Verge: Alberta's Best Rock" which = is a=20 showcase of 14 of Alberta's best rock artists and "The Heart of Alberta" = which=20 showcases 8 of Alberta's best country and folk artists. To round out the = genres,=20 "The Greatest Underground Show of Earth" is a compilation of 14 of = Calgary's=20 best metal bands. Calgary has a very passionate, organized and committed = metal=20 scene that is probably the country's best kept secret. This project was = the=20 brainstorm of Jeff Muller of Alchemy Recording Studio and has the = support of=20 some local DJs that will distribute the disc to stations across the = country.=20 Appearing on the disc are Blacksky, Caveat, Despirited, Decipher, = Insidious,=20 Inspected by 40, Katabasis, Occams Razor, Plague., Rob Spencer Band, = Sufferance,=20 Tempered, Verbal Deception and Wormbox.

Rek: When will The Greatest Underground Show on Earth be released = and will=20 you be doing a launch showcase with some of the talent?
The disc = is=20 currently being mastered at the Lacquer Channel in Toronto. Some final=20 production work is underway on the graphics and we should see a street = date of=20 late November. Because of the number of bands on the compilation, there = will be=20 a number of shows organized amongst the bands on the compilation and, of = course,=20 the disc will be available at the shows.

Rek: How can people outside of Alberta get their hands on this=20 release?
It will be available for sale in hardcopy through my = website or=20 softcopy via iTunes and other download retailers. I am also working on a = distribution deal that would put it in stores across the country. In = fact, fans=20 can now pre-order a copy at a discounted amount and will be mailed an = advance=20 copy prior to its official release.

Rek: What advice can you provide bands for when they get = approached to=20 contribute to compilations?
Firstly, find out how the money = works. Most=20 compilations are the result of recording studios that produce = compilations to=20 showcase the talent of the studio, not the musician, they overcharge on = the sale=20 of the discs and the bands see nothing. The intent of any compilation = should be=20 to get as many artists' music into as many hands as possible with as = little cost=20 as possible. Anything short of that is criminal.
